BASIC DIGITAL EDUCATION INITIATIVE (BDEI)
Equipping underserved communities with essential digital literacy skills to participate in the digital economy.

About the program
Basic Digital Education Initiative (BDEI) is designed to expand equitable access to foundational digital literacy for youth and educators in underserved communities.
BDEI advances national digital inclusion through two parallel outcomes including: equipping 10,000 underserved youth and educators with practical digital, technology, and AI literacy skills and establishing a nationally recognised Policy Framework for digital inclusion
A key part of how BDEI delivers this at scale is through the tools it puts directly in the hands of learners, including the Ilimi Kit.
1To expand access to device & AI literacy for underserved youth
2To ensure standardized, consistent, and high-quality program delivery across BDEI implementation models
3To strengthen program sustainability and community ownership
4To influence the adoption of a nationally relevant Basic Digital Education framework

Ilimi Kit
One of the most persistent barriers to digital learning in underserved communities is limited access to devices. The Ilimi Kit addresses this directly. The portable, multi-component technology kit supports classroom learning by introducing young learners to basic digital literacy through preloaded devices built for low-resource communities. It enables practical, hands-on learning both within and beyond the classroom. The Ilimi Kit is not a standalone program. It functions as a core implementation tool within BDEI, translating the initiative's goals into tangible learning experiences for the communities it serves.
